Static Build-a-Box lets merchants create customizable subscription bundles with fixed pricing where customers choose their own products. Instead of pre-built bundles, subscribers select which products go into their box—helping increase average order value (AOV), lifetime value (LTV), and retention.
A static box has a set number of product slots and a fixed recurring price that stays the same regardless of which products are selected. Customers can swap products in and out through the customer portal at any time, making it easy to personalize their subscription experience.
How Static Build-a-Box works
When you create a Static Build-a-Box product in Skio, it generates a parent product in Shopify. This parent product acts as the subscription container. When Skio processes renewal orders, the individual products inside the box appear as separate line items in Shopify, each discounted to $0 (the box price is charged as the parent line item).
This structure ensures compatibility with fulfillment partners while giving subscribers full flexibility to customize their box contents through the customer portal.
How to set up a Static Build-a-Box
Step 1: Create your Static Build-a-Box product in Skio
In the lefthand menu of your Skio Dashboard, go to Acquire > Build-a-Box.
Click + Static Box.
Enter a name for your box (this name will appear on your storefront).
Select which products customers can choose from.
Set the number of items that can be added to the box.
Set the fixed price customers will pay for this box.
Click Save changes.
Skio automatically creates a draft product in Shopify. You'll activate this product in a later step.
Static Build-a-Box uses a fixed price regardless of which products are selected. If your products have significantly different prices and you need variable pricing, consider using Dynamic Build-a-Box instead.
Step 2: Configure your Static Build-a-Box
After the static box has been created, you can customize how your Build-a-Box experience appears to customers using the following settings:
Header: Set the title text displayed at the top of the Build-a-Box page.
Toggle options
Hide amount saved: Turn this on if you don't want to show customers the amount they're saving on the box.
Show parent box view (Customer Portal): This displays the grouped (parent) box structure in the customer portal. Useful if customers manage multiple boxes.
Step 3: Activate your Static Build-a-Box product in Shopify
In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
Find your Static Build-a-Box product (it will be in draft status).
Change the product status from Draft to Active.
Select the sales channels you want your product published to, including your Online Store sales channel to have it appear on your storefront.
Optionally, add a product image to represent the box.
If updates you make to your product in Shopify aren’t reflecting, you’ll need to sync your products in your Skio Dashboard > Tools > Products > Sync products to pull in any new images or updates.
Step 4: Configure a selling plan for your box
In the lefthand menu of your Skio Dashboard, go to Features > Selling Plans.
Create a new selling plan, or add your newly created static box to an existing selling plan.
Your Static Build-a-Box is now live and ready for customers to customize.

How subscription orders are processed
When a Static Build-a-Box subscription renews, Skio passes the individual products as separate line items in the Shopify order. Each product appears at $0 (applied via a manual discount), and the box itself carries the full subscription price.
Example Shopify order:
Build-a-Box (Parent Product): $50.00
Product A (Child Item): $0.00
Product B (Child Item): $0.00
Product C (Child Item): $0.00
Product D (Child Item): $0.00
This structure ensures that fulfillment partners can see exactly which products to ship while maintaining the fixed box pricing.

On the storefront, customers will see Static boxes as a regular product, different than the custom Box Builder configuration for dynamic and sectioned boxes. They can add the product to their cart as a one-time or subscription.
