Getting started with Selling Plans

What are selling plans?

Selling Plans are the subscription types you offer to customers for purchase. They define the recurring purchase options displayed on your product pages, quiz flows, and checkout—giving customers flexible ways to subscribe to the products they love.

Skio offers three types of Selling Plans:

  • Subscribe and Save: Offer a percentage or fixed discount on products purchased at recurring intervals

  • Prepaid: Let subscribers pay for multiple shipments upfront, with discounts to incentivize prepayment

  • Build-a-Box: Allow customers to build a customized box of their favorite products

Use Selling Plans to attract subscribers with discounts, lock in upfront revenue, and create longer-lasting customer relationships that improve Customer Lifetime Value (LTV).

Why use selling plans?

  • Attract more subscribers: Subscription discounts incentivize customers to commit to recurring purchases

  • Reduce purchase friction: Subscriptions eliminate the need for customers to repeatedly buy products they use regularly

  • Lock in revenue: Prepaid subscriptions secure confirmed revenue upfront

  • Increase lifetime value: Subscriptions create longer customer relationships and opportunities for upselling directly in the Customer Portal

  • Offer flexibility: Give customers control over their subscription frequency and product selection

Create a Selling Plan

Creating a Selling Plan walks you through three steps: Plan basics, Billing & pricing, and Review.

Step 1: Navigate to Selling Plans

In the lefthand menu of your Skio Dashboard, go to Products > Selling Plans. This page lists every Selling Plan group you've created, along with its type, number of products, and last modified date.

Step 2: Choose a plan type

Click Create new plan in the top right corner, then choose the plan type. You can't change this after the plan is created.

  • Subscribe & Save: Recurring billing with a discount on each order.

  • Prepaid: Customers pay upfront for multiple deliveries.

  • Dynamic Box Subscribe & Save: A recurring box customers fill from eligible products, billed like Subscribe & Save. Learn more about setting up a dynamic Build-a-Box here.

Step 3: Enter basic info

  1. Enter a Group name. This is for internal use only—customers never see it.

  2. Select a Shipping profile. Choose Managed by Shopify to let Shopify handle shipping automatically, or select a custom Shipping Profile.

Learn more about Shipping profiles here.

Step 4: Select products

Under Products, click Select products to search and choose products and variants individually, or click Upload CSV to bulk-add products. The first row of the CSV is a header; add one identifier per row—Shopify variant IDs or GIDs, product GIDs (selects every variant), or product handles.

Then click Next.

Step 5: Configure billing & pricing

On the Billing & pricing step, set up each interval option for this plan.

  1. Enter a Customer-facing label. This is what subscribers see (e.g., Every 2 weeks).

  2. Set Billing every to the interval (e.g., 1 Weeks, 1 Months).

  3. (Optional) Turn on Lock order to a specific day to charge every cycle on a fixed day—useful if you batch production or shipping. Learn more about cutoff days here.

  4. Choose a Pricing rule: Percentage off (a percentage off the product price on every order) or Set price (a fixed price per order, regardless of product price).

  5. Enter the Discount (%) or Price per order, depending on the pricing rule you chose.

  6. (Optional) Set Min cycles or Max cycles to require a minimum number of billing cycles before cancellation, or to cap total renewals.

Set price is not compatible with Shopify market prices and will be ignored if you use them. If you set a set price (e.g., "$90 for subscription"), that amount gets converted to other currencies but doesn't inherit your market-specific price adjustments. Use Percentage off instead if your store uses market prices. Learn more here.

Step 6: (optional) Add a recurring pricing policy for future cycles

Click Add recurring pricing policy to change the discount or price after a set number of cycles—helpful if you have a "trial" or "starter kit" version of a product, where the initial order discount should differ from the recurring discount.

  • After cycle: Choose how many cycles should pass before the new pricing applies.

  • Pricing method: Choose Percentage off or Set price.

  • Discount: Set the discount or price value.

Learn more about Recurring Price Policy here.

Step 7: (optional) Add advantages

Click Add an advantage to list up to 4 short benefits (50 characters each) for this interval. Advantages display as a checklist in the storefront widget and the Customer Portal.

Step 8: Review and create your plan

Click Next to reach the Review step. Confirm the plan type, basic info, and billing & pricing details, then click Create plan.

1-click checkout links are generated after the plan is created.

Create a Prepaid Selling Plan

Select Prepaid as the plan type in Step 2 above to start a Prepaid Selling Plan.

Learn more about creating Prepaid Subscriptions here.

Create a Build-a-Box Selling Plan

  • Dynamic Build-a-Box: Select Dynamic Box Subscribe & Save as the plan type in Step 2 above. Customers choose products from a curated selection each billing cycle. Learn how to set up Dynamic Build-a-Box selling plan.

  • Static Build-a-Box: The setup process is the same as creating a Subscribe & Save Selling Plan. During product selection, choose the Static Box you created and add it to the Selling Plan.

Choose the Build-a-Box type that matches your setup, then follow the step-by-step guide above to create your Selling Plan.

How customers purchase subscriptions

Once you create Selling Plans, they automatically appear in the Skio Plan Picker on your product pages. Customers can select their preferred subscription option at checkout.

FAQ

What happens to existing subscribers when I modify Selling Plans?

All existing subscriptions continue operating under the original pricing and intervals that were in place when they started. Existing subscriptions are not automatically updated when you modify a Selling Plan.

If you need to update existing subscriptions, use Skio's bulk operations tool for pricing changes, or contact Skio support for assistance from the Technical Support team.

Can I change the order selling plans appear on my storefront?

Yes. You can change the order of the selling plans by navigating to Products > Selling Plans and selecting the desired selling plan. Use the arrows next to a selling plan's ID to reorder your plans, move them up or down until they're in the order you want. Be sure to click Save changes once the selling plans are re-ordered to confirm your changes.

Can I have multiple Selling Plans for the same product?

Yes. You can add a product to multiple Selling Plans—either a combination of prepaid and subscribe & save, or a combination of different intervals. This gives customers more subscription options for the same product.

Can I offer different discounts for different intervals?

Yes. When setting up a Selling Plan, you can configure unique discounts for each interval you add. For example, you might offer 10% off monthly subscriptions and 15% off quarterly subscriptions.

How do I remove a product from a Selling Plan?

Navigate to the Selling Plan in your Skio Dashboard, locate the product you want to remove, and click the remove or delete option. This does not affect existing subscriptions using that Selling Plan.

Can customers change their subscription interval after purchasing?

Yes. Customers can update their subscription frequency through the customer portal, as long as the new interval is available in an active Selling Plan for that product.

Can I bulk import products into a selling plan with a CSV?

Yes, when adding products to a selling plan you have the option to select products or upload CSV. The first row of the CSV is a header. Then, add one identifier per row—Shopify variant IDs or GIDs, product GIDs (selects every variant), or product handles.

What are Advantages and where do customers see them?

Advantages are short benefit statements (up to 4, 50 characters each) you can add to an interval. They display as a checklist in the storefront widget and the Customer Portal.

Can subscribers still skip or pause before they've met the minimum order requirement?

Yes. The minimum cycles setting only restricts cancellation — it doesn't affect a subscriber's ability to skip or pause. Subscribers can skip or pause an order at any time, even before they've reached the minimum number of cycles you've set. Once they reach the minimum, cancellation becomes available as well.
