What happened to Bulgarian lev subscriptions?
As of January 1, 2026, payment providers began declining transactions in Bulgarian lev (BGN) due to Bulgaria's transition to the euro (EUR). For merchants, this means any active subscriptions using BGN as their currency will fail at checkout, and you'll see payment errors from your payment gateway.
Important: This is a payment provider limitation, not a Skio issue. Subscriptions set to BGN cannot be updated to EUR due to Shopify API restrictions—the currency is locked to the original subscription contract.
How to resolve failing BGN subscriptions
You have two options to resolve this issue:
Option 1: Customer recreates their subscription
The simplest solution is to recreate a new subscription using EUR currency:
Cancel the existing BGN subscription in your Skio Dashboard.
Ask your customer to resubscribe through your storefront checkout, which will now default to EUR, or create it for them manually.
This ensures the subscription is set up correctly with the updated currency from the start.
Option 2: Request bulk support
If you have a large number of affected BGN subscriptions and need assistance migrating them to EUR, contact our support team at support@skio.com.
Include the following in your request:
A list of affected subscription IDs (if available)
Confirmation that you'd like Skio to migrate these subscriptions to EUR
Discount codes cannot be automatically transferred during migration. You'll need to manually reapply any active discounts to the new subscriptions.
