Build-a-Box FAQ

Yes. Customers can swap individual products within a static box through the Customer Portal, as long as the total number of items stays the same.

For example, in a 4-item box, a customer could change from "2x Product A + 2x Product B" to "1x Product A + 3x Product C." What they cannot do is change the box size itself through product swaps. Switching from a 4-item box to a 6-item box requires selecting a different box size option.

There's no direct one-step swap from a regular product to a Build-a-Box subscription in the portal. As a workaround, the customer can add the Build-a-Box to their subscription, selects the box contents, then removes the old product.

Swapping from one type of box to another (for example, dynamic box A to dynamic box B) is supported via bulk operations.

One-time products can be added to a subscription that contains a Build-a-Box, but they exist as standalone lines outside the box structure. They won't appear as part of the box in the customer portal's box editor. They show as separate line items.

Editing discount tiers on a dynamic box updates the discount settings for all subscriptions using that box, including existing subscribers. The discount is calculated dynamically at billing time based on the current tier configuration, so changes take effect on the next billing cycle for everyone.

If you need different pricing for existing vs. new subscribers, you would need to create a separate box configuration with different discount tiers and migrate subscribers using a bulk operation or Journey.

Build-a-Box is only compatible with the Online Store sales channel. It isn't supported on other Shopify sales channels like Shop, POS, or Buy Button.
