How to set up Prepaid Gifting

Outline

Overview

This article is for setting up Skio's Prepaid Gifting functionality via the Shopify Customizer tool. For additional questions (or if you run into any issues/bugs) please reach out to our Support team at help@skio.com !

What is it?

Prepaid gift subscriptions give customers the ability to pay for a subscription for a friend and have it fully managed by the recipient. Gifting is an additional feature on top of our prepaid subscriptions. You can learn more about standard Prepaid subscriptions here

When a customer buys a gift subscription they are billed for it originally and the recipient receives an email inviting them to manage their subscription. At the end of the gift subscription, you can reach out to the gifted customer to prompt them to sign up for their own subscription.

Example: I purchase a prepaid subscription for my neighbor. My credit card and billing address are used, however the subscription is managed by my neighbor under their email address and my payment method is not used moving forward.

Why should I use it?

Adding gifting as an option for your customers allows your brand loyalists to spread the word, promote your products and to help in boosting customer acquisition while keeping their payment methods and personal information secure.

How do I set it up?

Product and selling plan setup

Create a prepaid subscription selling plan for the product you wish to offer as a gift. This selling plan is required to have a set max cycles equal to the total required to cover the full prepaid billing interval. (IE with a yearly subscription and monthly delivery, the Max cycles should be set to 12.

Online store setup

The Skio Prepaid Gifting widget allows customers purchasing a Prepaid subscription to add two line_item properties to their item, `_prepaidGiftEmail` and `_prepaidGiftMessage`. This will ensure that Skio processes the order as a "Prepaid Gift", rather than a standard order!

To add the Prepaid Gifting widget to your Product page, follow the below steps:

  1. Open the Shopify Theme Customizer (click on "Customize" in your Shopify Admin > Theme page)
  2. At the top of the Customizer, click where it says "Home page", and then select "Products"
  3. Click on the desired Product page template (typically "Default product", but some stores may have multiple)
  4. In the Shopify Customizer tool, on the left-side of the screen under "Template" you should be able to see "Skio Subscriptions" or "Skio Plan Picker" written as one of the currently-applied section blocks. If you do not see this element, you can proceed, however this indicates that your install of subscriptions functionality may be "custom" and may not work as expected with the "Skio Prepaid Gift" widget.
  5. At the bottom of that same section, click "Add block", and then click "Apps" to find the "Skio Prepaid Gift" app block option.
  6. Click the "Skio Prepaid Gift" option to add the block to the section.
  7. Drag the "Skio Prepaid Gift" block to be directly under the other "Skio Subscription/Skio Plan Picker" block, or otherwise wherever you would like it displayed on the page.
  8. The "Skio Prepaid Gift" block should show a "Form" check as well as a "Selling Plan Input" check; if either of those fields shows a red X instead of a green checkmark, please check the "Form ID" field option inside of the "Skio Prepaid Gift" block's settings (right-hand side of the screen).
    1. If the "Form ID" has been confirmed as matching the ID of the "add to cart" form on the product page, please reach out to help@skio.com for assistance.
    2. If the "Form" check is green but the "Selling Plan Input" field is red, this implies your form doesn't currently feature Subscription functionality, and you may be missing the main "Skio Subscriptions" app block.
  9. Copy customizations can be made within the "Skio Prepaid Gift" block's settings (right-hand side of the screen).
  10. Make sure to click "Save" at the top-right of the screen to save your changes.
  11. You should now be able to see the "Prepaid Gifting" widget on all product pages that use the selected Product page template and feature a Skio Prepaid selling plan option!

Important: If you are using a custom product page you will need to include two custom attributes _prepaidGiftEmail and _prepaidGiftMessage

Notification setup

You can edit the email that the gift recipient receives upon receiving the gift in notifications, or by clicking here.

If your store is currently using Klaviyo, you can add the Prepaid gift received metric instead and build a flow from that as well!
