Overview
- Adding products into Skio creates the subscription rules so a product can be ordered on subscription
- A subscribe and save plan or a prepaid plan is required for each shipping interval per variant
- Products will be configured during the migration but brands will likely need to update or add products over time
What is it?
The products page in the Skio admin is how a brand will manage the subscription settings for each product in Skio. Skio will sync directly with Shopify and all products in Shopify can be added into Skio as a subscription.
Why should I use it?
Setting up products in Skio is a requirement if the product is going to be offered as a subscription on the website or to make it available within the customer portal.

Step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Adding your first product
- To add your first product, go to Skio > Products
- Click “Add Product”
- Skio continually syncs with Shopify and will automatically pull in all of your products into this page
- Note: Just because the product is available to setup as a subscription doesn’t mean merchants have to make it available as a subscription
- Merchants can add any products they wish
- Once you add a product into Skio with a subscription plan, the product will now be available to order as a subscription
Step 2: Subscribe and save plans
- For a product to be available on subscription in Skio, a subscribe and save subscription plan or a prepaid subscription plan must be configured for each variant
- We have a bulk subscription plan tool to help you save time
- These subscription plans will add the subscription properties to the product
- Subscription plans can be created on the variant level to give merchants greater control over their configuration rather than attaching subscription properties on the product level
Step 3: Product settings
- Once the merchant chooses which subscription plan they want to add, a prompt will appear to configure the different subscription settings
- A subscription plan must be created for each variant per shipping interval
- For example, if a merchant wanted to offer a product to renew every 2,4, 6, and 8 weeks they would need to configure 4 subscribe and save plans
- Skio has a bulk operations tool that allows merchants to bulk create subscribe and save plans
- The bulk operations tool can be found at the top of the Products page
- Merchants can choose the following options for each subscribe and save plan:
- Discounts: choose between a percentage discount (classic subscribe and save) or choose a fixed price that will override the price in Shopify
- Shipping interval: choose the shipping frequency and frequency type (days, weeks, or months)
- Customer facing label: choose what the customer sees on the PDP in the plan picker
- Order day: choose a set charge day of the week or month (charge date of the month is only available for month frequency)
- Minimum number of renewals: if enabled, this will hide the cancel button in the customer portal until X charges
- Maximum number of renewals: if enabled, this will automatically cancel the subscription after X charges
- 1-click checkout link: this link can be used in marketing emails to send the customer directly to checkout with the product already added into the cart
- Skio offers the ability to offer 1-time upsells, hide subscription products in the customer portal, and even hide from the 1-time upsell section so the merchant’s CX team can offer 1-time surprise and delights
Step 4: SKU swaps
- Skio offers an automated variant swap and price adjustment tool called SKU Swap
- The SKU Swap is based on if this, then that logic
- Swapped variant: choose the new variant that the subscription will be swapped to
- Note: Merchants can choose to swap to a specific Variant ID or a SKU
- New price: if the variant price is different, choose the new price that the subscriber should be charged
- Trigger: the automation will trigger based on order count and will maintain the conditions for the last swap for future orders
- Swapped variant: choose the new variant that the subscription will be swapped to
Step 5: Prepaid subscriptions
- Skio offers prepaid subscriptions which allow a subscriber to pay upfront for multiple orders
- With a prepaid subscription, a subscriber can buy a 6 month subscription upfront with $0 orders that ship monthly until the next 6 month renewal
- The prepaid shipments are flexible so subscribers can skip them or swap out the variable if they want to change up their order
- Prepaid subscription plans can be created alongside a subscribe and save plan for any variant to make use of both subscription types
Step 6: Group referrals
- Skio has an in-house referral tool that we call Group referrals
- Merchants can choose the tiered-style discount that subscribers will get for each new subscriber who joins the group (up to 4 subscribers per group)
- Ex: If the group discount is set to 5%, then a 2 friend group will each get an additional 5% off all recurring orders, 10% off all recurring orders with a 3rd member of the group, and an additional 10% off each order if there are 4 people in the group
- Group referrals is similar to a Shopify style such that every subscriber has their own subscription and each subscription is charged and managed by the individual, but they all benefit from a shared discount
- The way it works is a subscriber will share their referral link from their customer portal and text it to a friend
- The link sent to the friend will send the friend directly to checkout with a prefilled cart with the product the referrer is subscribed to
- After the referee checks out, both subscribers will benefit from additional discounts for each recurring order
- Subsequently, if a subscriber cancels then they will be removed from the group and the group discount for the whole group will drop down 1-tier
- For example: With a 5% off discount per friend, a group of 4 friends would get 20% off. The tier structure would be 2 friends = 10% off, 3 friends = 15% off, and 4 friends = 20% off. If one subscriber cancels, the entire group drops down a tier. In this example, if 1 subscriber in the group cancels then the whole group would now drop down to a 15% discount. If another subscriber cancels, the group of 2 will drop down to 10% off. Referring a new friend will increase the group discount which incentivizes not only referrals but high retention rates.
