What is the “Unlisted” product status in Shopify, and can I use it with Skio?

Prev Next

Yes, Shopify’s new “Unlisted” product status is compatible with Skio subscriptions. You can now mark products as Unlisted in Shopify to control their visibility, while still managing them in Skio for use in Selling Plans, bundles, or workflows.

Warning

Unlisted products can still be purchased if someone has the direct link. By default, Shopify does not block customers from adding unlisted products to cart from the product page. If you need to prevent purchases from the product page, you'll need custom code to disable the Add to Cart button or redirect visitors away from the product page.

What is an “Unlisted” product?

The Unlisted status is a new product visibility option in Shopify (alongside Active, Draft, and Archived). Products marked as Unlisted:

  • Are hidden from search engines, Shopify’s on-site search, your catalog, and your sitemap

  • Can only be accessed via direct link

  • Are ideal for products you want to keep off the storefront (like free gifts, subscriber-only items, or bundle-only products)

How can I use unlisted products in Shopify?

Here are some examples of when you can use unlisted products:

Free gifts for subscribers

Use an unlisted product as a gift that’s automatically added for loyal customers. This is common in loyalty tiers, milestone rewards, or Surprise & Delight campaigns. The product stays hidden from general customers but can be added through Skio workflows {{ glossary.Journeys}}">like Journeys.

Starter kits with refill swaps

Use a dedicated starter kit as the first item in a subscription, then automatically swap to a refill product for future cycles. Keeping the refill product unlisted ensures it’s not purchasable outside the intended subscription flow.

Social or influencer-only offers

Promote hidden products through direct checkout links in social campaigns (Instagram, TikTok, etc.). These products remain off the main site but are fully purchasable through curated links.

Post-purchase upgraded gifts

Offer a gift product only after checkout. For example, as part of an upgrade-to-subscription flow. Keeping the gift product unlisted ensures it doesn’t appear in your storefront.

Gift-only or prepaid variants

Use dedicated products for prepaid or gifted subscriptions. Keeping them unlisted ensures they’re only accessed through the intended gift purchase flow.

Transition or replacement products

During product migrations or sunsetting, create replacement products that are unlisted. Subscribers can be swapped over without the replacement product being publicly available.

Samples for loyalty or rewards

Create unlisted sample products used in loyalty or Surprise & Delight campaigns. These can be added via automation or workflows and remain invisible to regular shoppers.

Reserve inventory for subscribers

You can delist a product in Shopify to hide it from your storefront while keeping it active in Skio. This lets you reserve inventory for existing subscribers without allowing new purchases.
