# Volume discounts guide

# What are volume discounts?

Volume discounts are tiered pricing rules that automatically apply discounts based on your customers' cart quantity or subscription spend. You can create two types of volume discounts:

- **Quantity-based volume discounts:** Discount on multiple products (e.g., 10% off when purchasing 6 or more items)
- **Price-based volume discounts:** Discount on subscriptions based on subscription total (e.g., 25% off when subscription total reaches $200+)

Volume discounts can be combined with order discounts, product discounts, and shipping discounts—control these settings by clicking **Settings** in the top right of the Volume Discounts page.

## How the discount appears to customers

### What customers see in the cart

When a customer's cart reaches a spend threshold, the discount is automatically applied. The **discount title** appears along with the calculated savings. If they add/remove items and move between tiers, the discount updates in real time.

Similar to the cart, the **discount title** appears along with the calculated savings.

> Skio uses your store's default currency for spend thresholds and converts automatically for international customers via Shopify.

### What customers see in the Skio customer portal

If a subscription is *below* the lowest threshold, customers see a banner telling them how much more to add to get the discount. Clicking **View eligible items** shows products they can add.

Once they cross a tier by editing their subscription, the discount applies automatically. If they drop below a tier, the discount is removed and the banner returns.

## Volume discounts FAQ

---

###

#### What does the Sync Rules button do?

The **Sync Rules** button updates existing subscriptions so your new discount rule applies to their **next order**.

If you don’t click it, the discount won’t apply until the order *after* next. That’s because Skio normally applies rules when an order is processed, so subscriptions that already have their next order set won’t get the new rule unless you sync.

Click **Sync Rules** to make sure the discount applies right away.

#### Can I apply volume discounts to one-time purchases?

Yes, you can control whether a price-based or standard volume discount applies to one-time products during configuration:

- Subscription products only
- Both subscription and one-time products

Select the **one-time products** checkbox during the rule setup to configure this setting. You can change this setting at any time.

#### How do I edit customer-facing discount text?

You can update all customer-facing discount text, including banner prompts, in the **Translations** section of your dashboard:

1. In your Skio dashboard, go to **Storefront > Copies & Translations**.
2. Use the search bar to find **“volume discount.”**
3. Edit the text to match your brand voice or translate it into another language.

#### When do volume discounts become active?

If no date is set, the rule applies instantly to checkout and customer portal.

#### Do volume discounts automatically apply at checkout?

It depends on if your store is using Shopify Scripts or Shopify Functions.

If you currently use Shopify Scripts for discount logic (like free shipping for subscription carts), plan to migrate to Shopify Functions since [Scripts are being deprecated](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/script-editor/transitioning-to-functions). This migration will also allow Skio to apply the volume discounts automatically at checkout, which requires Shopify Functions.

#### Why isn't my volume discount applying at checkout?

Skio Volume Discounts run as a **Shopify product discount**. Shopify only allows **one product discount per line item**. If a customer is eligible for two product discounts on the same item, Shopify will automatically apply whichever offers the better value and ignore the other.

For the volume discount to apply alongside your other active discounts, combining must be enabled on each discount. If any active discount is not configured to combine with product discounts, the volume discount will not apply.

To fix this:

1. Go to **Shopify Admin > Discounts**
2. Open each active discount and check the **Combinations** setting
3. Enable **Combine with product discounts** on any conflicting discount, or remove it entirely.
