This article walks through the most common issues and how to fix them. ## Before you start - **Shopify discount codes are set up in Shopify.** Skio applies Shopify discount codes to subscriptions, but a code's value, product eligibility, and usage limits are set in your **Shopify Admin** > **Discounts**. Other discount types are set up in Skio. See the table below. - **Know the order discounts apply in.** Shopify applies only one product discount per item, and discounts stack in a set order. See [How discount stacking works in Skio](/help/docs/how-discount-stacking-works-in-skio) before troubleshooting a combination of discounts. - **Have an affected subscription open.** Most checks below are easier with a specific subscription in front of you in your **Skio Dashboard** > **Subscribers** > **Subscriptions**. ## Know which type of discount you're troubleshooting Discounts on a subscription can come from Shopify, from a Skio feature, or from another app, and each type is set up in a different place. Before you troubleshoot, find out which type the discount is. Then you'll know where to check its settings. | **Discount type** | **What it is** | **Where to set it up** | **Listed in Shopify Admin > Discounts?** | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | **Shopify discount code** | A code you create in Shopify. When it's applied to a subscription, the subscription keeps its own copy of the code's value and limits. | **Shopify Admin** > **Discounts** | Yes. You create it. | | **Selling plan discount** | The subscribe-and-save price set on your selling plan. It sets the subscription price, so it isn't a discount on the subscription. | **Products** > **Selling Plans** | No | | **Volume discount** | Quantity-based or price-based tiers. At checkout it applies as a Shopify automatic discount. On subscriptions, Skio adds and removes it as the subscription changes. | **Grow** > **Volume Discounts** | Yes. Skio creates an automatic discount named `Skio Volume Discount`. | | **Skio Loyalty credit redemption code** | A one-time code Skio creates each time a customer redeems credits. It's a fixed amount off, can be used once, and only by that customer. | **Loyalty** > **Credits** (set a code prefix with **Loyalty discount code prefix (optional)**) | Yes. Skio creates one code per redemption. | | **Skio Loyalty tier discount** | A **Discount** or **Free shipping** reward on a loyalty tier. It's added to the subscription directly, not as a code. | **Loyalty** > **Tiers & Rewards** | Not as a code. Skio creates automatic discounts for checkout when you set up loyalty. | | **Skio Referrals friend discount** | The code a referred friend uses on their first order. Skio creates it for each referral code. | **Loyalty** > **Referrals** > **Friend reward type** | Yes. Skio creates it. | | **Skio Referrals referrer reward** | The reward the referring customer earns: credits or a discount code. | **Loyalty** > **Referrals** > **Referrer reward type** | Only if you choose a discount code. Skio creates it. | | **Surprise & Delight discount** | A discount added to the subscription by a Surprise & Delight rule. | **Retain** > **Surprise & Delight** | No | | **Cancel Flow discount** | A discount added to the subscription when a customer accepts a discount offer in your Cancel Flow. | **Retain** > **Cancel Flow** | No | | **Journey or bulk operation discount** | An **Add discount** action. A percentage or fixed amount is added to the subscription directly. Choosing a code applies one of your Shopify codes. | **Retain** > **Journeys**, or **Tools** > **Bulk Operations** | Only when a Shopify code is used | | **Manual discount** | A discount your team adds to one subscription. | Open the subscription in **Subscribers** > **Subscriptions** and use **Apply manual discount** | No | | **Third-party loyalty or referral code** | A code created by another app, like LoyaltyLion. | In that app | Depends on the app | > [!NOTE] > **Note:** Codes that Skio creates for loyalty and referrals are real Shopify discount codes. You'll see them in **Shopify Admin** > **Discounts**, but they're set up from the Skio pages listed above. To see how these discount types combine on the same order, see [How discount stacking works in Skio](/help/docs/how-discount-stacking-works-in-skio). ## A discount was removed from a subscription Skio doesn't remove a discount code because it expired or because the customer used it on another order. A code stays on the subscription until its payment limit is used up or something removes it. Check whether one of these happened: - [ ] **The product on the subscription was swapped.** After a swap, Skio checks whether each discount code on the subscription can still apply to the new product. If the code is limited to specific products or collections and the new product isn't one of them, Skio removes the code from that item, and removes it from the subscription entirely if no eligible items are left. Skio also removes a code that Shopify rejects after the swap. See [Troubleshooting product swaps](/help/docs/troubleshooting-product-swaps). - [ ] **The subscription was canceled.** If **Remove discount codes on cancel** is turned on in **Settings** > **General**, Skio removes the subscription's discounts when it's canceled. They don't come back if the subscription is reactivated. - [ ] **Someone or something removed it.** A discount can be removed by your team, by the customer in the Customer Portal, by a Journey, or by a bulk operation. - [ ] **The subscription no longer meets a volume discount tier.** If the subscriber changes their subscription and drops below a price-based volume discount tier, the volume discount is removed. It applies again once they're back above the threshold. See [Volume discounts guide](/help/docs/volume-discounts). > [!NOTE] > If the subscriber should still have a discount, re-apply an eligible code from the subscription in your **Skio Dashboard**, or use [How to add or remove discounts in bulk](/help/docs/how-to-addremove-discount-in-bulk) for many subscriptions at once. ## A discount code applies to more orders than expected How many subscription orders a discount code applies to is controlled by the code's payment limit for recurring orders in Shopify, not by its usage limits. This is the most common reason a code meant for one order, including a loyalty reward code, keeps discounting renewals. Check the following: - [ ] **Is the code's payment limit set for subscriptions?** In **Shopify Admin** > **Discounts**, open the code and check how many recurring payments it applies to. If it should only discount one order, limit it to the first payment. - [ ] **Are you relying on "once per customer"?** Shopify's once-per-customer limit only counts uses at checkout. It stops a customer from redeeming the code again at checkout, but it doesn't limit how many renewals the code discounts once it's on a subscription. - [ ] **Was the code edited after it was applied?** When a code is applied, the subscription keeps a copy of the code's settings at that moment. Changing the code in Shopify later doesn't update subscriptions that already have it, so a payment limit you added afterward won't apply to them. - [ ] **Is the same code on more than one subscription?** If a customer has the same code on several subscriptions, each subscription gets the discount. - [ ] **Is the code from a loyalty app?** Third-party loyalty apps create their own discount codes. Check the reward's subscription settings in that app. For example, in LoyaltyLion, a discount reward only applies to more than one subscription payment if **Apply discount to future subscription payments** is checked. See [How to set up the LoyaltyLion integration](/help/docs/how-to-set-up-the-loyaltylion-integration). To fix subscriptions that already have the code, remove it with a **Remove discount** bulk operation using the **Code** type. If those subscribers should keep a discount for a set number of orders, add a **Percentage** or **Fixed amount** discount in bulk and set the number of orders it applies to. See [How to add or remove discounts in bulk](/help/docs/how-to-addremove-discount-in-bulk). > [!NOTE] > **Note:** A code that reaches its end date keeps applying to subscriptions that already have it. An end date only stops new redemptions. Use the code's payment limit, not its end date, to control how long a subscription gets the discount. ## A second discount code won't apply By default, a subscription can only hold one discount code. Applying a second code fails if **Allow discount code stacking** is turned off in **Settings** > **Billing & orders**. With stacking off, a code also can't be added while the subscription has an active Cancel Flow discount. If stacking is turned on and the code still won't apply, check the **Combinations** settings on both codes in **Shopify Admin** > **Discounts**. Skio checks Shopify's combination rules, so both codes must be allowed to combine with each other's discount type. > [!WARNING] > **Warning:** Keep code stacking turned off unless you have a specific strategy that needs it. With stacking on, customers can combine codes from coupon sites on the same subscription. ## A volume discount isn't applying at cart or checkout Volume discounts apply at cart and checkout through a Shopify discount named `Skio Volume Discount`. This requires your store to use Shopify Functions. If your volume discount isn't showing in the cart, work through these checks: - [ ] **Is the Skio Volume Discount active in Shopify?** Go to **Shopify Admin** > **Discounts** and confirm `Skio Volume Discount` is active. If it's deactivated, volume discounts still apply to subscriptions but not at checkout. - [ ] **Is the rule within its dates?** Check **Start date** and **End date** under **Targeting & limits**. Dates are checked against your store's local date. - [ ] **Are the items in the cart subscription items?** Only items added with a subscription plan count toward the rule. One-time items only count if **Apply to one-time products?** is turned on. - [ ] **Are the items eligible products?** Only products selected under **Eligible products** count toward the quantity or spend threshold. - [ ] **For quantity-based rules, is the condition right?** The rule counts the total quantity of eligible items in the cart. If **If there are** is set to `Exactly`, the discount only applies when the cart has that exact number of eligible items, not more. Use `At least` to apply it at that number or higher. - [ ] **For price-based rules, is the spend threshold met?** **Spend at least** is compared to the eligible items' total after the subscription discount from the selling plan, not their full price. - [ ] **Is it a Build-a-Box cart?** Price-based volume discounts don't apply at cart when the cart contains Build-a-Box items. See [Choosing between Build-a-Box and volume discounts](/help/docs/choosing-between-build-a-box-and-volume-discounts). - [ ] **Is another product discount competing?** Shopify only applies one product discount per item, and the volume discount won't apply alongside a discount that isn't set to combine with product discounts. See [Volume discounts guide](/help/docs/volume-discounts) for how to fix combinations in Shopify. > [!NOTE] > **Note:** If more than one volume discount rule matches the cart, only the one with the biggest savings applies: one quantity-based rule and one price-based rule at most. To control which other discount types the volume discount can combine with, go to **Grow** > **Volume Discounts**, click **Settings**, and update **Volume discount can be combined with**. ## A volume discount isn't applying to existing subscriptions Skio applies volume discount rules to existing subscriptions when an order is processed, so a new or edited rule can take an extra order to show up. Check the following: - [ ] **Did you sync the rule?** On the **Volume Discounts** page, click **Sync rules** so the rule applies to each subscription's next order. Without it, the discount won't apply until the order after next. - [ ] **Is the subscription a migrated subscription?** Quantity-based rules skip subscriptions created before Skio unless **Apply to migrated subscribers?** is turned on. - [ ] **Does the subscription match the creation date filter?** If the rule uses a **Subscription creation date filter**, subscriptions created outside that range are skipped. - [ ] **Is the rule within its dates?** Rules outside their **Start date** and **End date** don't apply. ## Still not working?
