# Customer & Order subscription tags in Shopify

## What are subscription tags?

Subscription tags are labels that Skio automatically applies to customers and orders in Shopify to identify subscription activity. These tags help you segment your customer base, build targeted marketing campaigns, track subscription performance, and create custom reporting.

Skio applies tags at both the order and customer level, giving you flexibility to filter and analyze subscription data based on your business needs.

## Order tags

Skio applies tags to every subscription order in Shopify to help you identify order type and customer lifecycle stage.

To view order tags in Shopify:

1. From your Shopify Admin, go to **Orders**.
2. Select any order to view its details.
3. Find the **Tags** section to see all applied tags.

### Available order tags

| Tag String | When Applied |
| --- | --- |
| `Subscription First Order` | First order in a subscription |
| `Subscription Recurring Order` | Subsequent recurring orders |
| `Subscription Gift Order` | Order contains gift subscription items |
| `Skio static box order` | Static box subscription order |
| `Used Credits` | Order used credits |

## Customer tags

Skio applies tags to customer profiles in Shopify to reflect their current Subscription Status and payment health, making it easy to build Shopify automations, filter order views, or segment orders for lifecycle marketing campaigns in tools like Klaviyo. These tags are particularly useful for building customer segments in Shopify, triggering win-back campaigns for canceled subscribers, or identifying customers who need payment support.

Customer tags update automatically as customer subscription status changes.

To view customer tags in Shopify:

1. From your Shopify Admin, go to **Customers**.
2. Select a customer to view their profile.
3. Find the **Tags** section to see all applied tags.

### FAQ

#### When a customer cancels their subscription, does Skio change their `Active product subscription` tag to `Canceled product subscription`?

As long as the customer has at least one active subscription, they retain the `Active product subscription` tag in Shopify. Skio only removes this tag and adds the `Canceled product subscription` tag once all subscriptions are fully canceled.

#### When a customer starts their subscription, does Skio give them the `Active product subscription` tag? What happens if a customer has multiple subscriptions?

Yes, when a customer starts a subscription, Skio automatically adds the `Active product subscription` tag in Shopify.

**This tag works at the *subscriber* level, not the individual subscription level.**If a customer has multiple subscriptions, they keep the `Active product subscription` tag as long as at least one subscription remains active. When they cancel all subscriptions, Skio removes the active tag and adds the `Canceled product subscription` tag instead.

Subscription Status indicates the current state of a subscription, such as Active, Failed, Paused, or Cancelled, affecting billing and management.
