# Smart Upsell guide

## Before you start

- Before products can appear in the Smart Upsell carousel, each product needs to be enabled for one-time upsell individually. Learn more about [editing product settings here.](/help/docs/adding-products#edit-product-settings)
  - In the left-hand menu of your **Skio Dashboard**, go to **Products** > **Products**, find the product, and toggle on **Show one-time upsell for customer**.
- You can also hide out-of-stock products from the carousel automatically. Go to **Settings** > **Billing & Orders** and turn on **Hide out of stock products from carousel**.

# What is Smart Upsell?

Smart Upsell displays a product carousel in your subscribers' Customer Portal, letting them add one-time purchases to their next order. You configure which products to show and which subscribers to target using rules.

### How Smart Upsell works

Each rule has two core settings:

- **Promotion Group Type:** The set of products to show in the carousel.
- **Audience Targeting:** The subscribers who will see the rule.

When a subscriber opens their Customer Portal, Smart Upsell evaluates your rules in priority order (top to bottom) and shows the first matching rule's products. Rules that don't match a subscriber are skipped. If multiple rules match the same subscriber, their products are combined in the carousel with higher-priority rules appearing first.

The carousel title is set globally under **Global Settings** and applies to all rules.

## How to set up Smart Upsell

### Step 1: Navigate to Smart Upsell

In the left-hand menu of your **Skio Dashboard**, go to **Grow** > **Smart Upsell**.

### Step 2: Configure global settings

Under **Global Settings**:

1. Enter a **Carousel title** — this is the heading subscribers see above the upsell carousel in their Customer Portal. The default is "You might also like."
2. Check **Show badges** if you want badge labels to appear on upsell products. Badge text and colors are configured per rule.

### Step 3: Create a rule

Click **+ Create new rule** at the top right of the Rules section.

1. Give your rule a name: this is only visible to you (example: Best Sellers).
2. Set the **Promotion Group Type**: the products to promote:
  - **Best Selling Products** (refreshed daily, based on Shopify data): Your store's top-selling items.
  - **Recommended** (refreshed daily, based on Shopify): Suggestions based on what customers with similar purchase history bought.
  - **Selected Products:** A specific list of products you choose manually. You can add up to 16 products per rule.
  - **Products with tag(s):** Products matching specific Shopify product tags.
3. Set **Audience Targeting**: which subscribers see this rule:
  - **Everyone:** All subscribers.
  - **Subscribers with product(s):** Subscribers who have an active subscription containing a specific product.
  - **Subscription created in past N days:** Targets newer subscribers within a set number of days since their subscription was created.
  - **Customers with Shopify tag(s):** Subscribers who have a specific Shopify customer tag. Enter the tag(s) in the **If customer tag is in** field that appears below.
4. If **Show badges** is enabled in Global Settings, configure the badge for this rule:
  - **Badge text:** The label that appears on products in this rule's carousel (e.g., "`Popular`" or "`Gold tier`").
  - **Background color:** The badge background color (hex value).
  - **Text color:** The badge text color (hex value).
5. If you selected **Selected Products** as your Promotion Group Type, click **+ Add products** and choose which products to include. If a product isn't enabled for one-time upsell, you'll see a **Not enabled for one time upsell** warning next to it — click **Edit products** to go directly to that product's settings and enable it.

### Step 4: Set rule priority

Rules are evaluated from top to bottom. The rule at the top is Priority 1 and takes precedence.

To reorder rules, use the **up and down arrows** ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/a953bba6-c70d-43ce-bc77-d7f32a8fc514/Images/Documentation/CleanShot 2026-05-13 at 12.26.09.png) on the right side of each rule row. The priority number updates automatically as you reorder.

To disable or delete a rule, click the **⋮** menu on the right side of the rule row and select **Disable rule** or **Delete rule**.

### Step 5: Save your changes

Click **Save changes** in the top right corner to apply your settings.

## FAQ

---

###

#### Can a subscriber see products from more than one rule?

Yes. If a subscriber matches multiple rules, the products from all matching rules are combined in the carousel. Higher-priority rules appear first.

#### What happens if none of my rules match a subscriber?

The carousel won't appear for that subscriber.

#### Do I need to enable products individually for Smart Upsell?

Yes. Each product must have **Show one-time upsell for customer** toggled on under **Products** > **Products** before it can appear in any rule's carousel. If it's not enabled,[you'll see a warning when adding it to a rule.](/help/docs/smart-upsell#step-3-create-a-rule1)

#### Can I have different carousels for different subscriber segments?

Yes, that's what rules are for! Create separate rules with different Promotion Group Types and Audience Targeting to show different products to different groups.

#### Does changing a rule affect subscribers in real time?

Changes take effect after you click **Save changes**. Subscribers will see the updated carousel the next time they open their Customer Portal.
