# Upgrade & Save checkout extension for Shopify Plus

## What is the Upgrade & Save checkout extension?

The **Upgrade & Save Checkout extension** is a feature available exclusively for Shopify Plus merchants using Skio. This extension enables merchants to offer their customers the ability to upgrade one-time purchases to subscriptions directly within the Shopify checkout. This feature works with both regular products and Build-a-Box bundles, allowing customers to take advantage of subscription savings and easily manage their subscriptions during checkout.

### How it works

- **Upgrade to subscription**: Adds a prominent button in the checkout, encouraging customers to convert eligible one-time purchases into subscriptions with potential savings.
- **Modify subscription in checkout**: Allows customers to adjust their subscription plan directly in the checkout, simplifying Subscription Management.
- **Gift handling**: Excludes items identified as gifts (priced at $0) from upgrades and modifications, ensuring proper handling for promotional items.
- **Build-A-Box support**: Special handing for Build-A-Box items ensures that all items in a box are upgraded. when the customer converts the box to a subscription.

## How to enable the Upgrade & Save checkout extension

1. **Navigate to the Shopify Admin:**Log in to your Shopify Plus admin dashboard.
2. **Access Checkout Settings**:
  - Go to **Settings** >**Checkout**

3. **Add Skio App Blocks:**
  - In the checkout customizer, locate the **Order Summary** section.
  - Add the following app blocks:
    - **Checkout Upgrade & Save**

## Configuring the Extension

Once the app blocks are added to your checkout, you can customize the extension settings to fit your store's needs. Here's a breakdown of the configuration options available:

1. **Upgrade to a Subscription Plan Text:**
  - Customize the button text encouraging customers to upgrade.
  - Use `{{discount}}` as a placeholder for the highest available discount percentage, e.g., "Subscribe & Save `{{discount}}%`."
2. **Modify Your Subscription Plan Text:**
  - Edit the prompt text that allows customers to adjust their existing subscriptions directly in checkout.
  - Default: "Change your subscription plan?"
3. **One-Time Order Text:**
  - Customize the text label for a one-time purchase option.
  - Default: "One-Time"
4. **Save Changes Text:**
  - Edit the text on the button for saving any changes made to the subscription.
  - Default: "Save"
5. **Show Discount Preview in Selling Plan Option Selector:**
  - Toggle whether to show a preview of the subscription discount in the plan option selector.
  - Options: **True** (default) or **False**
6. **Percentage Discount Preview:**
  - Set the text displayed for percentage-based discount previews.
  - Use `{{discount}}` off off as the placeholder, e.g., "15% off."
7. **Fixed Value Discount Preview:**
  - Set the text displayed for fixed value discount previews.
  - Use `{{discount}}` off, where `{{discount}}` represents the currency value, e.g., "$10 off."

### Special considerations for Build-a-Box

If you offer Build-a-Box configurations, the Upgrade & Save Checkout Extension applies the subscription upgrade to all items in the box when a customer chooses to subscribe. Customers will see clear notifications about these changes during checkout.

**Gift items:** Items priced at $0 are automatically treated as gifts and excluded from upgrade and modification options. This ensures promotional or complimentary items remain unaffected during checkout.

A feature enabling customers to create custom subscription boxes from selected products to increase average order value (AOV). Available in Dynamic and Static configurations.

Subscription Management refers to the processes and tools used to oversee customer subscriptions, including billing, renewals, and modifications.

Recurring Revenue is the income generated from ongoing subscription services, providing a stable financial foundation for businesses.
